Chapter Seventeen

There was a moment of shocked silence while everyone looked around, wondering whether they’d heard Tumi correctly.

“So . . . we can join the Dragon Games after all?” Will asked.

“Really?” Corin pressed. “A flapling tournament? Does that mean we’ll be able to ride our dragons by then?”

“No, no!” Tumi said, shaking his head with a laugh. “It’s an experimental thing. Teams of dragons under two years old are going to compete in a series of contests. There’s even going to be a cash prize for the winning team.”

Will gasped. His parents! If he won enough money, maybe he could help them! “A cash prize? How much?”

He wasn’t the only one who seemed interested. A lot of the other riders were murmuring together excitedly, like they were already planning how they’d spend their money.

Tumi shrugged. “I’m not sure. The prizes for the Dragon Games are always generous. It would be more than enough for a few of you to furnish your new drekhems nicely when you move to your new dragonholds. The usual prize for events like the coastal race is twenty silver pieces.”

Someone gasped. Will looked and saw Anri staring at Tumi with wide eyes and her hand over her mouth.

The excited chatter kicked up a notch, with murmurs of ‘twenty silver pieces!’ scattered through the crowd.

Will didn’t really understand how Avrian money worked. He hadn’t even had the opportunity to pay for anything. But from everyone’s reaction, it seemed like that much silver was a lot.

Would it be enough to pay his parents’ debt and get them out of Elder Madoc’s farm?

“We all get to attend the dragon games this year,” Tumi said, talking loudly to be heard over the chatter. Even if you don’t join the flapling tournament, there will be plenty to do. Aside from watching the games, there will be fireworks, food, dancing, feasting, entertainers, snacks, gifts to buy for family and friends, and things to eat!”

Everyone laughed.

“Even if you choose not to compete in the tournament, I guarantee you’ll have fun. So, how many of you want to enter?”

Of course, the clamor of kids rushing forward and shouting overwhelmed Tumi. He didn’t seem to mind, though. Tumi laughed and held up his hands, half heartedly fending off the surge of eager competitors.

Will whooped with joy and rushed forward with the rest of them and Vortex bugled a long, loud note, giving his wings a good flap.

Everyone started asking questions at the same time, jostling each other to get in front and grab Tumi’s attention.

“How long do we have to train?”

“How many of us can team up together?”

“What will we be competing in?”

“Is there an entry fee? I don’t have any money!”

“Okay, okay! Settle your wings, everyone!” Tumi waved everyone off and waited for them to quiet down. “Now, listen. This might be hard to take, but you’ll need to form teams of three.”

Will quickly did the math in his head. There were twenty eggs at the hatching, which meant that one dragon and rider pair would have to get left out.
